Pirot was founded in the 1^st century AC and at that time it was called Turres what means tower in Latin.

As soon as Romans came in these areas they have started building the road Via Meditalis. In the middle age this road was known Constantinopole road which had both military as well as trade importance. The fact that it went trough the clown meant another itself adventage for successful development of trade in this area..

In the second half of the 14^th century the name of town was changed and it gets Greek name Pirgos which meaning is tower. In its 20 centuries old history the town was being ruined for several times: in fire, people were dying from plaque and cholera, many had been killed in wars held on these lands; the town was being flooded few times and twice hit by earthquake.

But the town kept recovering and went on living.

In the 19^th century it becomes trading and economic center of this part of Turkish Europe.

The most important trade industrial line is the production of kilims, has become to exist in the 16^th century.Beside the production of kilims the production of pottery is one of the oldest manufactor art became on this landes. Pirot is known in production of kachawail – hard yellow cheese.

The Pirot citizens learnt the technology of process milk and production kachawail from Greeks and Vlahs.
